Penseum Alternatives for Students: Free & Paid Options (2026)

By Keanu, founder of Quizzify · Updated October 1, 2026

If you're looking for a Penseum alternative, start with the kind of practice you need. For quizzes generated from your own lecture notes, written-answer feedback, and scheduled review, Quizzify is my pick. For flashcards you make or import yourself, start with Anki or Knowt.

The short answer

  • Quizzify — best fit for quizzes from your own notes with scheduled review. Upload PDFs, slides, documents, or textbook photos; answer a mix of question types; get feedback; and return to questions when they're due. The free plan includes 100 credits per week. Standard Pro pricing starts at US$9.99/month.
  • Anki — best fit for customizable flashcards and long-term memorization. Create cards, import a deck, and control your review settings. Desktop, AnkiWeb sync, and Android are free.
  • RemNote — best fit for keeping notes and flashcards together. Turn your notes into cards, study with spaced repetition, and add AI features within your plan's allowance.
  • Knowt — best fit for free Quizlet-style study modes. Use Learn, Practice Test, Match, Flashcards, and Spaced Repetition on your own sets without a paid plan.
  • Quizlet — best fit for finding an existing study set. Search shared sets before making your own, then check that the content matches your course.

Penseum remains worth considering if you mainly want a tutor that explains problems out loud and works through them on a shared canvas. Quizzify also has a text-based Socratic tutor, but its main focus is practice questions, answer feedback, and review.

From notes to a quiz: one worked example

For this example, Quizzify generated two written-answer questions and two multiple-choice questions from original sample notes on simple DC circuits. Here is part of the source:

Ohm's law is V = I × R: voltage equals current times resistance. A 6-ohm resistor connected to a 12-volt supply carries 2 amperes. Two 6-ohm resistors in series have a total resistance of 12 ohms, so the same 12-volt supply produces 1 ampere.

You can download the full sample notes and try them yourself. These screenshots use a local test account with real AI-generated questions and grading. The later review uses a simulated next day, explained below.

1. Bring one lecture's material

Open Create, choose From Files, and add your material. Supported formats include PDF, DOCX, PowerPoint slides, TXT, HTML, and PNG/JPG images. You can also paste text or generate from a topic.

For course-specific practice, start with your actual notes or slides. Choose the question count and mix: multiple choice for exam-style practice, written answers for recall, or a combination. After generation, review the questions and edit or remove anything that does not fit your source.

The generated questions covered Ohm's law, the power formula, current through resistors in series, and equivalent resistance in parallel. This is the Ohm's law question opened for individual practice:

A real Quizzify question asks for the relationship between voltage, current, and resistance, with a written-answer box.

2. Answer before revealing the explanation

Quizzify checks written responses with AI and provides a score and feedback. Multiple-choice, true/false, and matching answers are checked against the stored answers. A score helps you find material to revisit; check AI feedback against your source when something looks wrong.

For the example answer, we entered “Voltage equals current divided by resistance.” The captured evaluation scored it 40% and identified the mistake: the formula uses multiplication, not division. The feedback separates what the answer got right from what needs correcting.

Quizzify gives the sample answer 40 percent, explains that voltage equals current times resistance, and schedules review in one day.

3. Return when questions are due

The default review schedule uses your score on each question. An answer below 60/100 is scheduled for another review after one day. A first successful review is scheduled three days later, then six days after the next successful review, with subsequent intervals adjusted by performance. A separate fixed-interval setting is also available.

Use Start Reviews on the dashboard to work through due questions across your decks. Correctly answered questions also come back, with longer gaps as you keep succeeding. You can follow the full Quizzify exam-study walkthrough for the setup steps.

For the screenshot below, the test clock was advanced 25 hours. The card's calculated review date had passed, and the same question was opened again with Review: 1.

The same Ohm's law question appears with Review: 1 after advancing the test clock by 25 hours.

What can you do for free?

The free plan gives you 100 credits per week. Quiz generation costs 30 credits per run, AI answer evaluation costs 1 credit, and a Socratic tutor request costs 3 credits. These share the same allowance, so three generation runs use 90 credits and leave 10 for other credit-consuming actions. Other AI features can also use credits.

Start with one lecture and one generation run so you have credits left to try written-answer feedback. Paid plans raise the allowance to 10,000 credits per week under the fair-use limit.

The alternatives in more detail

1. Quizzify: practice questions with feedback and spaced repetition

Choose Quizzify if you have course material ready and want to spend your study session answering questions. The useful combination is generation, feedback, and a return schedule: you don't have to write every question or decide from scratch what to review tomorrow.

It also supports folders, progress tracking, and a Socratic tutor for working through difficult concepts. Written answers let you practise explaining a concept instead of only recognizing the correct option.

  • Choose it if: you want mixed question formats based on your notes, feedback on written responses, and automatic review scheduling.
  • Look elsewhere if: your priority is live voice tutoring, a large shared-deck library, or studying entirely offline. AI generation, grading, and tutoring need an internet connection.
  • Price: free with weekly credits; standard Pro plans are US$9.99/month, US$29.99 per four-month pass, or US$59.99/year. The current lifetime offer is US$169.99.

2. Anki: customizable flashcards

Anki is an open-source flashcard app with spaced repetition. You make or import cards, try to recall the answer, then rate how well you remembered it. Its settings and add-ons suit students who want control over their study system.

  • Choose it if: you're building a long-term deck, already have a useful shared deck, or need offline study.
  • Look elsewhere if: you want built-in AI generation from lecture files. Anki add-ons and third-party tools can extend that workflow, but require additional setup.
  • Price: desktop, AnkiWeb sync, and AnkiDroid are free; the official iOS app is a one-time purchase.

3. RemNote: notes and flashcards together

RemNote combines note-taking with spaced-repetition flashcards and AI study tools. It is worth a look if you want to write notes and build your review material in the same workspace.

  • Choose it if: you want connected notes, cards, and PDF study tools.
  • Look elsewhere if: you mainly want to upload material and start a quiz without organizing a note-taking system. Also compare the AI allowances before paying: Pro and Pro with AI have different limits.
  • Free plan: unlimited notes and flashcards, three annotated documents, and 250 AI credits per month.
  • Price: Pro is $96 billed yearly; Pro with AI is $216 billed yearly. Their monthly equivalents are $8 and $18 respectively, not month-to-month charges.

4. Knowt: free flashcard study modes

Knowt's free plan includes unlimited sets and every study mode on your own sets, including Spaced Repetition. Its AI tools have separate limits: the free plan currently includes one AI summary per month.

  • Choose it if: you want free flashcard drilling and several ways to practise the same set.
  • Look elsewhere if: you expect unlimited AI processing of your own lecture files on the free plan.
  • Price: Ultra is $24.99/month or $149.99/year. It removes ads and adds AI file tools and the Call Kai voice tutor.

5. Quizlet: shared sets and familiar study modes

Quizlet lets you find existing sets or create your own, then practise with flashcards and other study modes. It also supports AI practice tests from uploaded notes, subject to plan and availability limits.

  • Choose it if: your classmates or teachers already use good sets that match your course.
  • Look elsewhere if: you want unrestricted access to premium study modes on a free account. Other people's sets also need checking against your syllabus.
  • Price: free access is available. Quizlet Plus has monthly usage limits; Plus Unlimited offers broader access. Confirm the current price on its upgrade page; I could not independently verify the checkout amounts for this comparison.

How to choose a Penseum alternative

  1. If you need help understanding a worked problem: compare Penseum's voice-and-canvas tutor with the tutoring features you actually need. Knowt Ultra also offers voice tutoring.
  2. If you need exam practice from your own material: start with Quizzify and try a mix of written and multiple-choice questions. RemNote and Quizlet also offer AI study tools, so compare their workflow and limits.
  3. If you want to build or import flashcards: choose Anki for customization and offline use, or Knowt for free study modes in a web app.
  4. If you want notes and cards together: try RemNote. If finding a ready-made set matters most, start with Quizlet.

For Quizzify, the simplest trial is one lecture, one generated quiz, and a return visit when your first reviews are due. Check whether the questions cover what you need and whether the feedback helps you correct an answer.

FAQ

What's the best free Penseum alternative?

Anki and Knowt are strong choices for free flashcard study. For AI-generated practice questions with scheduled review, Quizzify has a free plan with 100 credits per week. A generation run costs 30 credits, and AI grading and tutoring share the remaining allowance.

Which Penseum alternative should I try for practice quizzes?

Try Quizzify if you want to generate mixed question types from your own notes, get feedback on written answers, and have questions scheduled for review. Its default schedule brings weaker answers back sooner and spaces successful reviews farther apart.

Is Penseum free?

Penseum's homepage says it is free to use and lists a premium subscription at $29.99. That FAQ does not state the billing period or currency, so confirm those and the free limits in the app before upgrading.

Does Penseum have spaced repetition?

Penseum advertises tracking of mastery and weak areas. Its homepage does not explain a specific spaced-repetition schedule. That does not establish that scheduling is absent; check inside the app if automatic review timing is important to you.

Can Quizzify grade written answers?

Yes. Quizzify uses AI to evaluate written answers and provide feedback. It can help identify partial understanding, but the feedback still needs checking against your notes when it seems questionable.
